how we roll

Yesterday we took my dad rollerskating for the first time in about 20 years and my niece for the firt time ever. My aunt also came along for the fun. I couldn't believe we got them all up and on skates and they didn't fall as much as I thought they might have. I surprised myself and did not fall even once, though I had a few near misses.

It took a while to get into whatever perceived groove I had, but after a while I was able to make about 6-7 consecutive laps at a time, which is probably a new record for me. I would normally do one lap, exit and wait about twenty minutes before trying again. I should have worn full length socks with my full length skates but I thought I would be okay. We covetted this jaina's jam skates the whole session. I am going to see if I can find a deal on some of those. One thing I did not expect was to get so darn sweaty. The way I "roll", whether on bikes, skates, or the few times behind the wheel is that I feel I have to keep going and freak out about what will happen if I stop (car excepted). So I think I just keep pushing myself along when really I could coast a bit more and not use so much energy to get around the rink. I know part of it is also that I've still got quite a bit of extra personage to haul around, though thankfully not as much as I had a year ago. I know I shouldn't make too much of the numbers but I will be really excited when I officially lose 20 lbs. I am glad to have kept the 15 off and I keep getting close, but I'm not there yet.

My niece did so much better than I thought she would and kept going out there and giving it her best. I was afraid there would be screaming and crying but she kept it to a mild whine and some pretty good freaked out faces. I wish I was a better skater and could have taken her out a few times, but I think we'd take each other out before hitting the first turn. Good news is they still have the discount night during the summer so we might go to that a few times before the season is up. I know my thighs will be so thankful, and maybe if it is disco enough I can get away with a sweatband.

on guard

Sometime last week, in the wee small hours a wonderful creep reminded me of what I am missing by living in the city, creepy dudes. Have I been re-suburbanized to the extent that I forget some creepy dude might be keeping tabs on my routines? Maybe so.

Nothing happened, but it was enough put me back in to hyper-awareness mode and to kick myself for that being one of the few times I did not bring a phone or object with which to pummel said creep. He was parked on the opposite side of the street I was walking on and when I passed he got out of his vehicle and started walking in the same direction as me. I did have a head start on him so as soon as I hit the corner I hauled ass. I turned back a few times and no sign of him.

At first I wanted to think maybe I was paranoid, but seriously, who does that?
So now I am back on hyper alert, being way more careful, having many routes and so on. It's a bit more work to nix the old route, but I am definitely getting better walks now. I know that anything can happen anytime and all that good stuff but I also don't think it's fair that I have to worry about creepy dudes (or ladies!). I need a utility belt or something.

ketchup

Here is what you didn't miss in the past week:

Monday- My 32nd birthday! I did not end up wearing my summer dress because I did not have a sweater that matched it and cannot go strapless to work. Instead I wore a cowl neck top and denim pencil skirt to show off my hard work and the Tiffany necklace my sister got me (the Elsa Peretti bean one, haha!). I had lunch with friends from work and had dinner with my sister, niece and sister's boyfriend. We were disappointed the Mother's menu had changed so much but went to Native Foods and pigged out. I had a really lovely coconut cupcake.

Tuesday-blah

Wednesday- My parents took me to dinner @ cheesecake factory and I had a delicious Manhattan. The servers also sang to me, so cute!

Thursday- We met up with a friend to celebrate her birthday, but I was still celebrating my own. Two more Manhattans and my first super girly dressed up night of going out. It was fun, will have to do more of that.

Friday-Saturday were a blur of heat and grossness. We watched Night at the Museum 2, which was expectedly more corny for the kids but overall I liked it. I also started a great book about the most famous brothel in America- the Everleigh Club (which is where we got the slang expression "getting laid", it is short for getting Everleighed).

Sunday: I babysat again, played way too much I-Spy and watched Princess Protection for about the fourth time in three weeks. I made "Bitchin' Breakfast Burritos" from Skinny Bitch... and they were indeed bitchin'. Even my pickiest eater asked if she could have it for breakfast and lunch the next day. Were it not for having to leave some for my sister, they would not have survived beyond today. If she doesn't have a burrito tonight I am taking the rest tomorrow, bwahaha.

Yesterday: My dad helped me put together a canopy so that Penny can have it made in the shade. It turned out great. She loves it, I just hope she doesn't start chewing on the pvc pipe. I'd like to think she is over most of her puppy behaviors, but who knows.

I've been trying to cook a bit more but spend less time in the kitchen. I want to cook more often but I need to keep it simpler sometimes, especially now that it is too hot to be in the kitchen. Tonight I am making Quinoa Salad with Mango and Black Beans from Veganomicon. I finally used my super cute cookbook holder I bought a few years ago from a school fundraiser. My mom helped me round up the produce and I am afraid she grabbed Italian parsley instead of cilantro (oops) which I didn't notice until I was almost done with the salad(double oops). Another mishap is that I could not find grapeseed oil at either store I went to this afternoon, one healthy and one regular. I am using canola instead and hoping the red wine vinegar, cilantro and scallions will overpower it. I left it alone overnight to get acquainted so the jury is still out. I'll have to double check everything before I start prep next time.

p.s. this should have been posted last night but awesome cable did not allow, thanks!
